What is a heart attack?


Heart attack is when the blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, causing poor supply to the heart. If this is not treated in time, the affected heart tissue dies.











Common feelings of heart attack

The most common feeling during a heart attack would be chest discomfort. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing or pain. Different people or gender may experience different feelings, as illustrated in the diagram below:


Preventing Heart attack


There are 9 modifiable risk factors that accounts for 90% risk of the first episode of Heart attack. We call it the Interheart9. Modifiable risk factors means it can be managed by you. These include:


High blood pressure

High cholesterol

Smoking

Sedentary lifestyle

Diabetes

Poor diet

Excess alcohol

Post recovery of a heart attack


There are many things you can do post recovery. Your doctor would most likely put you on a cardiac rehabilitation program. This is a medically guided program comprising of nutritional counseling, physiotherapy and interventions. Lifestyle modification and physical activity are important, along with smoking cessation. This program is to improve your cardiovascular health.


Following a good eating habit, regular physical activity and quitting tobacco use will benefit the condition. If you have other conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, it would be good to control them.


What should I do if someone suffers from heart attack?

Immediately call the ambulance. Time is critical when it comes to heart attacks or strokes.
