Singapore the Food Heaven (Part 2): More movement, less chronic diseases

We all know that physical activity is beneficial, but how beneficial are they? What are the varieties of activities and how do they improve our health?

According to a study conducted by researchers in Stanford university, the average step count of 46 participating countries was 5000. Singapore ranked in 9th place, with a steps count of 5674. This is still below the recommendation of 7500 to 10 000 steps by Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB).

7500 to 10 000 steps daily is reported to improve blood pressure, blood cholesterol levels, and improved glucose control. This in turn will help to reduce the risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases.

“Regular exercise is beneficial to our health. By making small changes in our daily routine, we can increase our physical activity and reap the benefits of exercise”, said Minister of State for Communications & Information and Health Mr Chee Hong Tat.

Move to better health remedy

Ensure a minimum of 150 minutes a week of physical activity, this translates to about 30 minutes of physical daily for 5 days. Do not forget to include at least 2 days of resistance training.

Examples of aerobic activities:

Jogging, swimming, walking, yoga, aqua aerobics, ball games

Examples of anaerobic/resistance training:

short intense bouts of burpees, dips, mountain climbers, crunches, squats, skipping, sprints
